What You Will Do
- Determines size and type of container required, dimensions, kinds and sizes of wood and other materials used in fabrication of non-standard and special shipping cradles, crates and boxes when such information is not specified
- Interprets blueprints, sketches, specifications, patterns, etc., as required
- Plans sequence of operations and methods for fabricating container and for blocking, bracing and securing of contents for shipment
- Fabricates or directs the fabrication of these containers by marking or scribing trim and cutting lines for cutting to length, ripping to width, cutting ends angles and for making cut-outs by taking measurements directly from items to be shipped or by making reference to blueprints and sketches for exact dimensions
- Fabricates domestic or export shipping containers for shipment of large, irregular shaped items which require deviation from standard procedure and when standard or stock size boxes and crates cannot be used
- Builds special crating fixtures for shipping large items or other products, on various types of conveyances
- Directs and performs the operation of blocking, tying down, padding, securing and bracing of such items
- Works with the carrier to determine the loading, positioning and securing requirements per DOT with normal and oversize loads, whenever applicable by calculating and measuring the overall capacity of a specified carrier
- Works closely with Company office traffic personnel to obtain carriers for outgoing shipments
- Insures that load complies with carrier's specifications and when deviations occur, notifies Shipping Manager for disposition
- Confers with carrier and shipping manager to determine that shipping requirements have been maintained
- Maintains safety and compliance integrity in loading of shipments on carriers, including railroad cars, tractor trailers, and is responsible for proper packing, blocking and securing to prevent damage in transit
- Utilizes overhead crane, and/or variety of hand operated battery powered skid lifts: forklifts tow motors, hand trucks, dollies, “A” frames, etc.
What You Must Bring To Succeed
- HS diploma / GED equivalent
- Able to repeatedly lift, up to but not limited, 30 pounds unassisted on a consistent basis
- Able to physically be mobile to walk, stand and function on ladders and stairs on a consistent basis
- Effectively utilize communication tools such as email, radio, or company messenger to communicate issues, concerns, or any other information needed to complete any and all assigned jobs
- Able to physically work in shop working conditions, such as exposure to dirt, fumes, excessive cold and heat and noise
- Must verify all documentation such as shipping request, commercial invoice , quality certifications, carrier outbound label and material contents to match along with proper packaging to ensure product integrity before shipments are made to the customer
Salary
Salary for this role: $23.00 per hour.
