Crater 2nd Shift

About the role

Fabricates wooden crates or boxes using woodworking hand tools and powered tools, and packs items such as machinery, vehicles, or other large or odd-shaped products.

Responsibilities

• Read blueprints, shipping notices, and other specifications to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used, and types of supports or braces required.
• Lay out dimensions on materials using a ruler, measuring tape, and pencil.
• Saw materials to size using handsaws or powered saws.
• Assemble materials using nailing or stapling machines, screws, bolts, glue, and hand tools.
• Place product in container manually or using a hoist.
• Bolt heavy pieces to the bottom of the container or skid.
• Wrap and pad products with excelsior, paper, or other packing materials.
• Build crates around large or odd-shaped articles.
• Wrap and tighten metal bands around crates using banding equipment.
• Attach identification labels or stencils containing shipping destination, weight, and type of product.
• Cover military tanks or other equipment with neoprene or other protective covering to protect them during shipment.
• Count items to ensure compliance with shipping orders.
• Move containers to the shipping area and transport lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to the crating area using hand or industrial trucks.
