About the role

This role contributes to building public trust in the court system, addressing critical issues such as bail reform, marijuana decriminalization, and recovery court. The Essex Vicinage is seeking an individual to join the Pretrial Services Program, where you will interact with pretrial defendants, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, county jails, law enforcement, the private bar, and the public.
Responsibilities
- Research criminal case histories and conduct pretrial risk assessments.
- Prepare reports and make recommendations to judges regarding conditions of pretrial release for defendants.
- Staff first appearance/Central Judicial Processing hearings and pretrial detention hearings.
- Monitor conditions of pretrial release and assist defendants in meeting goals to ensure court appearance and public safety.
- Report defendant non-compliance with release conditions to the court.
- Provide guidance to clients with social, emotional, and rehabilitative needs, including referrals for social services, testing, treatment, or counseling.
- Monitor clients' treatment progress.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and one year of paraprofessional experience in case management, including:
- Conducting investigations,
- Monitoring casework flow,
- Interviewing clients or customers for information,
- Preparing investigative fact-finding reports, or
- Writing case notes or other case-related correspondence.
- Substitution: Additional paraprofessional or professional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis (one year of experience equals 30 semester hour credits). An associate’s degree with two years of additional experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
- Degrees conferred outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a recognized evaluation service (see www.naces.org/members.html).
- For some positions, physical ability to perform work requiring climbing, prolonged standing, stretching, bending, and reaching may be required.
- For some positions, the ability to frequently lift and carry supplies weighing 30–50 pounds (occasionally up to 75 pounds) may be required.
- Possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license may be required if operating a vehicle is necessary for essential duties.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. is required; U.S. citizenship is not mandatory.
- Newly hired employees must consent to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- Residency requirement: Newly hired employees must establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey within one year, per the "New Jersey First Act." Exemptions may be requested for hardship or employer critical need.
Schedule
The selected candidate will work a non-traditional schedule, including Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and after-hours on-call responsibilities.
Remote Work
The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work per week outside of Judiciary buildings. High-speed home internet access is required to participate.
Pay
The salary range for this position is:
- $54,434.49 to $89,181.84 for Schedule A (employees hired prior to June 3, 2014).
- $54,434.49 to $84,772.75 for Schedule B (newly hired individuals and employees hired on or after June 3, 2014).
Newly hired individuals typically start at the minimum of the salary range. Current Judiciary employees receive a 5% base salary increase upon promotion or advancement, not to exceed the maximum of the range or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater.
