Court Reporting Instructor

Full-time, 100% employment, 10 months per year, tenure track

About the Role

Teach Court Reporting classes for credit and non-credit courses to a diverse student population, including topics such as credentialing, speed mastery, and related fields. Participate in curriculum development, serve on department, division, college, and district committees, and engage in professional development activities to maintain and improve the instructional program.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
  • Contribute to the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the SLO assessment cycle.
  • Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.
  • Stay current with instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to the assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies (e.g., computer software applications).
  • Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; adhere to district, college, and division policies.
  • Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse student population through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback.
  • Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or historically underserved, including African American, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, and other disproportionately impacted students.
  • Work cooperatively with staff and students.
  • Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher AND two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
  • Any associate degree AND six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
  • Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area; OR
  • The equivalent qualifications as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

All degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. Evaluations of foreign degrees and/or coursework are required. Commitment to diversity and demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with stenography emphasizing accuracy and the ability to instruct students in software usage.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach court reporting software with emphasis on transcript preparation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in English, Legal, and Medical terminology with mastery of grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling.
  • Demonstrated understanding of modern reporting methods using realtime.
  • Demonstrated teaching ability and experience in a Court Reporting program.
  • Demonstrated experience with stenotype machines, computer-aided transcription software, and updated technologies related to Court Reporting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to counsel students in the certification standards for the Certified Shorthand Reporters license and/or a Registered Professional Reporter’s license.
  • Relevant professional experience and involvement with professional associations.
  • Preferred: Familiarization with Court Reporting licensing requirements.

Pay

Salary range: $85,541 - $128,379 annually
