Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; an evaluation of a foreign high school diploma may be required.
• One year of previous experience and/or training involving mail room, mail operations, or related delivery/distribution functions.
• Must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance; the license must show the current address.
• All candidates must submit with the application a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles “entire” driving history; Florida histories must be obtained at any Broward County courthouse and must be the three-year record (seven-year and online records are not accepted).
• If you have held a driver’s license in any other state within the past seven years, you must submit an “entire” driving history from that state.
• The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application is received by the Bureau of Human Resources.
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered if clearly documented on the application.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to deliver, dispatch, and retrieve mail, parcels, packages, and other items related to the daily mail operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Employees perform mail courier and clerical support duties, including pickup, scheduling, recording, distribution, and delivery of inter/intra-departmental mail products. Work includes receiving, processing, and ensuring proper postage and packaging for outgoing mail and related distributions.

Essential Functions

• Pick up, schedule, record, receive, and deliver inter/intra-departmental mail, packages, and parcels in a timely manner.
• Inspect incoming mail, parcels, and packages for suspicious appearance to protect against potential chemical, biological, or other external threats.
• Open, sort, and arrange items for proper and timely inter/intra-departmental distribution and delivery.
• Receive, sort, and process daily outgoing mail; determine postage and prepare mail, packages, and parcels in accordance with U.S. Postal Service standards.
• Operate an agency vehicle for pickup and distribution of mail items when applicable to functional facilities and/or assigned route.
• Generate and file a variety of reports and records related to assigned courier functions.
• Perform related duties as directed.

Tasks involve intermittent performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects (20–50 pounds). Occasionally may require the ability to lift heavier items up to 100 pounds. Some tasks are performed in an office environment with standard safety provisions; when operating an agency vehicle, exposure to daily traffic conditions is expected. Tasks may also include intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements such as heat, humidity, inclement weather, or routine conditions in a corrections detainment environment.

Selection Process

Applicants who qualify will be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include evaluation of training and experience; written test; computer-based test; interview; polygraph examination; psychological evaluation; employment record check; fingerprint and background check; medical examination; and drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process varies by position and could last 10 to 12 weeks.
