Counter Salesperson

About the Role

Confidently assist customers who purchase and/or pick up merchandise at the Profit Center. Accurately process and fill sales orders generated at the sales counter. Attract and retain customers while working with the Profit Center Manager to establish revenue and margin targets.

Responsibilities

• Assist customers who purchase and/or pick up merchandise at the Profit Center.
• Accurately process and fill sales orders generated at the sales counter.
• Attract and retain customers.
• Work with the Profit Center Manager to establish revenue and margin targets.
• Verify the pick‑ticket ship date matches the customer’s pickup date, update as needed, and obtain a customer signature before releasing material.
• Provide reliable information regarding product specifications, pricing, and availability.
• Maintain a clean, neat, stocked, and safely displayed counter area and merchandise displays.
• Uphold security and control at the primary point of customer contact.
• Communicate any changes in a customer’s business that might create a credit risk to the Profit Center Manager and Credit Manager.
• Process cash‑sale returns and refund paperwork in accordance with company policy.
• Inform supervisors of inventory levels or stock depletions that could impact service.
• Assist co‑workers by answering incoming calls, stocking warehouse merchandise, and pulling orders for delivery.
• Complete required safety and compliance training programs.
• Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned by supervisors or management.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience in customer service or counter sales (contractor sales preferred).
• Knowledge of the products sold in the Profit Center.

• Comprehensive, up‑to‑date product knowledge with the ability to suggest related items.
• Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with customers, vendors, and co‑workers.
• Probing questioning techniques to understand needs, overcome objections, and close sales.
• Understanding and application of safety precautions in a warehouse and material‑handling environment.
• Willingness and ability to learn to operate warehouse material‑handling equipment and hand tools.
• Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to learn and use computer systems for order processing.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
