Counselor, UC Transfer (One-Year, Full-Time Temporary) Fresno City College

Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive counseling services for students, including academic, career, personal, and life transitions counseling on an appointment basis.
- Conduct group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops.
- Assist students in clarifying educational goals, selecting courses, and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs).
- Monitor student progress through comprehensive electronic data systems.
- Maintain close working relationships with program faculty, feeder high schools, and community resource agencies.
- Work with a diverse student population to emphasize strategies for educational planning and transfer preparation.
- Serve as the liaison to the Counseling Department on transfer services and activities.
- Develop and maintain student educational plans, interpret external transcripts, and provide individual and group counseling related to transfer functions, including assisting students with college admission requirements for CSU, UC, and independent colleges.
- Review Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG), evaluate transcripts, and provide information on financial aid and housing.
- Develop transfer workshops and participate in retention and outreach efforts to prepare students for transfer.
- Maintain close working relationships with staff, faculty, and student support units such as Admissions & Records, EOPS, DSP&S, College Relations, and Financial Aid.
- Work closely with the Department Chair and counseling leadership on completing administrative program reviews when assigned.
- Develop reports to monitor progress of transfer services and update the Counseling portion of the website related to transfer center services.
- Utilize and stay current with advanced counseling methods and student development theories, integrating technology to support student learning and career objectives.
- Provide counseling support for students on academic probation or disqualification.
- Conduct intake interviews, assessment interpretation, and use multiple measures to refer students to appropriate English and Math placements.
- Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities, as well as outreach activities in the community and on campus.
- Utilize and interpret a variety of career assessment tools.
- Attend professional seminars/conferences related to transfer and student success.
- Serve on and attend divisional, department, college, and district committees as needed.
- Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning.
- Provide services in various settings and times, including evenings, weekends, online, or off-campus as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
All candidates must demonstrate responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice.
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling; or
- A valid California Community College Credential; or
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).
(Note: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Qualifications
- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
- Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, with an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion shape participation and outcomes.
- Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to support racially minoritized students.
- Related work and professional experience in counseling or student services.
- Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as students with disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work with computers and other technologies used in providing high-quality instruction and support.
- Effective communication skills with students and staff.
- Experience designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students.
- Experience teaching courses in career and personal development or conducting workshops.
- Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes and student development theories.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain counseling notes in Starfish or similar electronic record-keeping software.
- Experience working effectively with student success programs.
- Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students.
- Experience using and interpreting career assessment tools.
- Experience developing and presenting counseling-related workshops and orientation sessions.
- Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus.
- Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status.
- Demonstrated ability to connect students with on/off-campus resources to assist in college life management.
- Demonstrated ability to use technology for data collection and analysis related to student success.
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on student success issues.
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
Pay
Starting annual salary is $71,054 – $108,772 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available.
Schedule
178 - 181 duty days per year, contingent upon funding. Duty days and salary will be prorated based on the start of the assignment. Services may be required in various settings and times, including evenings, weekends, online, or off-campus as needed.
