Counselor
This position is in the Department of Counseling Services, a part of Student Life at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). The employee provides counseling services to UMD students, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, while maintaining appropriate charting and paperwork. Responsibilities also include crisis response intervention, therapy or education group implementation, and consultation with students, staff, faculty, and administration, with a focus on outreach to underrepresented and underserved students. This is a temporary position working up to 32 hours per week for a total of 67 days or less per year.
This is an in-person position located within the Health Services Building at UMD in Duluth, MN.
Responsibilities
- Individual and group counseling and psychotherapy (90%):
- Conduct intake, assessment, and diagnostic interviews to evaluate presenting problems, general health, psychological functioning, psychosocial history, and academic performance.
- Provide treatment for identified issues and determine appropriate short-term therapeutic interventions for students with various psychological concerns.
- Maintain awareness of developmental and psychological issues relevant to a college population.
- Participate in mental health triage services on a rotating basis with other counselors.
- Refer students to other providers as needed, requiring knowledge of on-campus services and local resources (e.g., mental health providers, treatment programs, medical facilities, social services, advocacy services).
- Complete required paperwork, including intake summaries, progress notes, termination summaries, and referrals, using effective writing skills, time management, and UMD Health Services documentation systems.
- Collaborate with other service providers (e.g., advisors, student affairs, medical, psychiatric, disability, and career services) to coordinate care.
- Departmental collaboration and administration (10%):
- Attend departmental and divisional meetings to stay updated on work expectations and initiatives.
- Serve on committees and task forces to support counseling services outreach efforts across campus.
- Participate in special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- BA/BS plus at least two years of experience, or a combination of related education and work experience totaling at least six years.
- Minnesota Social Worker Licensure is required.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, and LGBTQ backgrounds, including knowledge and sensitivity to multicultural issues.
- Experience providing clinical services, consultation, and outreach to a diverse college student population.
- Experience working in a college health environment.

Pay
Pay Range: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour, depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Retirement plan options are available for eligible classifications.
