Counselor

Summary or Purpose

Under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal, the counselor is responsible for the implementation of research-based instructional strategies that direct the learning process and achievement of assigned students by developing, nurturing, and sustaining a school and classroom culture conducive to student learning. All instruction provided for students will be individualized, addressing differences in learning style, rate of learning, level of maturation, and level of achievement to inform instructional decision-making. Teachers are expected to vary materials, rate of instruction, and methodology based on frequent assessment.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Education required; Master's Degree preferred.
• Alaska Teacher Certificate required (Class C).
• Three years of experience in education preferred.
• Inupiaq, Language, History & Culture experience preferred.
• Six (6) years of experience may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree; eight (8) years for a Master's Degree.

Responsibilities

• Maintain competency in subject matter areas of certification and assignment, including teaching subjects outside of primary training with provided support.
• Employ appropriate assessment methods to identify student proficiency levels and plan short- and long-range programs to address those needs using formative and summative student achievement data.
• Foster harmonious and cooperative relationships with students, parents, supervisors, administrators, staff, and community members.
• Promote and support School District Goals as defined in the Board of Education Strategic Plan.
• Participate in educational committees and organizations for personal growth and professional development.
• Develop culturally responsive instruction that reflects local community interests and needs, including bicultural or multicultural content.
• Use Rubicon Atlas to complete requirements for culture-based unit development per annual expectations.
• Supervise and train instructional paraprofessionals in providing services to students as needed.
• Adhere to the code of ethics and professional teaching standards adopted by the Professional Teaching Practice Commission of the State.
• Write and submit weekly lesson plans to the Principal and maintain digital copies throughout the year.
• Follow all District policies and regulations.
• Perform additional tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
