About the role
The Counselor (Demonstrator) provides group, individual sessions, and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in an outpatient setting. They lead and participate in group, individual, and therapeutic processes under supervision, and evaluate emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Leads and participates in group, individual, and therapeutic processes under the supervision of a certified behavioral health professional.
- Determines short and long-range goals and treatment plans with students.
- Observes, records, and evaluates changes in students' appearance, behavior, and demeanor, maintaining accurate and timely records.
- Evaluates emergencies and takes appropriate action.
- Prepares reporting and documentation as required by Amity and contract compliance.
- Protects student's health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of student records.
- Attends workshops, meetings, and training as requested by supervisor.
- Serves as a Community Advocate role in addition to the job as requested by community leadership.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education and Experience:
- Required: Bachelors' degree in a behavioral health field and one-year experience in a Substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility; OR High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D., and a combination of Behavioral health education work experience totaling a minimum of two years; OR Knowledge of therapeutic community processes, methods, and design, including small-group dynamics.
- Experience with the fundamentals of the Therapeutic Teaching Community.
- Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse.
- Certifications or Licenses:
- Valid Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance card.
- Current valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- Tuberculosis test from a health professional.
- Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Record, or similar software.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to operate general office equipment.
- Understands human emotions with a high level of empathy.
- Empathy and understanding of role-reversal.
- Patience, active listening, and interest in diverse life stories.
- Good verbal and written communication skills with enthusiasm for helping people.
- Ability to maintain sensitivity and objective under pressure.
- Knowledge of medical/behavioral health terminology.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.
