Counselor, Alpha - $100,000/year USD
On-site at the Alpha School campus in Brownsville, TX.
About the Role
You've built your career coaching students — not merely teaching them. The distinction matters: coaching means connecting, challenging, and refusing to accept anything less than a student's full potential. Teaching often means delivering content. You've never been a content delivery mechanism.
Alpha operates one of the most unconventional schools you'll encounter. Students don't sit in rows listening to lectures. They progress through AI-powered learning applications at their own speed. AI manages the instructional delivery. Your responsibility is to facilitate life skills workshops that command the attention of K-8 students, lead motivation sessions that drive them toward weekly learning targets, and maintain standards when students attempt to settle for less. The academic progression takes care of itself. You manage the human element.
This position offers a meaningful ceiling, and that ceiling is greater student impact. Guides who consistently deliver results (100% of cohort achieving weekly app goals, 90%+ satisfaction scores) advance into Lead Guide positions where they train other educators in executing this work at a higher level. Students remain the priority.
Responsibilities
- Facilitating one-hour life skills workshops with K-8 students on topics including public speaking, focus, and feedback exchange
- Administering Test2Pass mastery assessments following each workshop to verify students have authentically mastered the skill, not simply attended the session
- Leading daily motivation sessions leveraging student profiles, interests, and Coachbot analytics to ensure 100% of your cohort reaches their weekly app advancement targets
- Deploying storytelling, incentives (school currency, leaderboards), and personal relationships to overcome student resistance
- Monitoring cohort satisfaction scores to maintain a 90%+ benchmark on student surveys
- Guide a cohort of K-8 students to achieve 100% of their weekly academic targets while facilitating life skills workshops that maintain 90%+ satisfaction scores
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Lecturing at a whiteboard. Students progress academically through self-directed AI-powered apps, not through direct instruction from you
- Supervising without engagement. Children using computers is the environment; active facilitation is the work
- Compromising standards when students resist. Test2Pass expectations remain consistent, even during difficult weeks
- Creating curriculum independently. Lesson plans and workshop frameworks are supplied; your role is to execute them with the presence and narrative skill that ensures genuine student absorption
- Handling parent communications, conducting admissions, or overseeing campus logistics. Those belong to a separate role
Requirements
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in any subject
- At least 3 years of experience working directly with K-8 (elementary and middle school) students
- Compelling storytelling and facilitation presence — able to hold a room of children engaged for an hour
- Willing to work on-site at the Alpha campus in Brownsville, TX
- Legal right to work in the US without visa sponsorship
Nice-to-have Requirements
- Background as an athletic coach, camp counselor, or youth program facilitator
- Track record of high performance in a competitive environment (academic, athletic, or professional)
- Experience working in a self-directed or app-based learning environment
