Primary Function

To administer guidance services to students within the school.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Establishes and promotes school guidance and counseling program.
  • Implements or assists in implementing the school-based guidance plan.
  • Develops a written school-based guidance plan based on student needs.
  • Implements an individual plan of action.
  • Implements and facilitates delivery of counseling services.
  • Counsels students individually by actively listening, identifying and defining problem(s), discussing alternative solutions and formulating a plan of action.
  • Conducts group counseling with students in areas of educational, career or personal needs.
  • Leads counseling or support groups for students experiencing similar problems.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of group counseling and makes revisions where necessary.
  • Implements and facilitates delivery of guidance services.
  • Collaborates with school staff to provide supportive instructional classroom guidance activities that relate to students' educational, career and personal needs.
  • Schedules time to provide opportunities for counseling.
  • Adheres to established system policies and procedures in scheduling appointments and obtaining parental permission.
  • Ensures that students receive appropriate career/life (educational or occupational) development assistance.
  • Provides or assists in providing information to students and parents on career/life development.
  • Assists students in their transitions to the next career (educational/occupational) levels.
  • Consults with school or system staff, parents and community.
  • Consults with school or system staff about issues, problems and concerns involving students, as needed or requested.
  • Exchanges relevant information about students or situations with school or system staff.
  • Develops with school staff a strategy or plan for improving the learning environment.
  • Follows up on counseling referrals and consultative sessions.
  • Consults with parents about issues, problems and concerns involving students, as needed or requested.
  • Exchanges relevant information about the student with parents.
  • Contacts, utilizes and follows up on referrals made to community agencies.
  • Follows professional practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
  • Interacts in a professional manner with students, parents, and staff.
  • Intervenes during student crisis situations.
  • Informs students, school staff, parents, and community of school guidance roles, special programs, and the school-based written guidance plan.
  • Is available to students, parents, and staff for conferences according to system policies.
  • Facilitates home-school-community communications by such means as holding conferences, telephoning, and sending written communications.
  • Maintains confidentiality of students and student records.
  • Works cooperatively with school administrators, other support personnel, teachers, and parents.
  • Models correct use of oral and written language.
  • Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content.
  • Complies with school, system, and state administrative regulations and board of education policies.
  • Conducts guidance and counseling activities at the times scheduled.
  • Supports regulations concerning student conduct and discipline.
  • Is punctual.
  • Maintains plans as required by school policy.
  • Adheres to school or system policy regarding counselor absence.
  • Involves administration in all aspects of the written guidance plan.
  • Implements designated guidance curriculum.
  • Demonstrates general knowledge of school curriculum.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and appropriate records and files reports promptly.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities according to school policy.
  • Complies with conditions as stated in contract.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the principal.

EIP Guidelines

Identifies eligible EIP students.
Determines placement and exit procedure of EIP students.
Develops instructional schedule which is effectively coordinated with the maximum number of classroom teachers and provides the following:
Developmental-appropriate learning experiences
Strategies designed to facilitate further development of children's language, cognitive, affective and motor skills
Instructional program characterized by:
Curriculum, based on the Quality Core Curriculum, which integrates the development areas, subjects, and organized teaching experiences around unit themes for at least part of the day.
Instructional materials that are concrete, real, and relevant
Coordinates building level parent instructional program, parent-teacher conferences and other parent involvement
Participates and assists in system-wide parental activities
Participates in staff development activities
Maintains appropriate/required records on each EIP student
Submits reports as required by building level administrator and/or EIP program coordinator
Maintains/adheres to specified classroom schedule
Actively participates in all EIP classroom/instructional programs
Assists classroom teachers in the preparation of instructional materials (not to include clerical duties)
Communicates on regular basis with classroom teachers
Demonstrates initiative in developing and teaching instructional topics
Acts in a professional manner and assumes responsibility for the total school program, its safety and good order
Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities
Assumes responsibility for supervising students in out-of-class settings
Completes professional development plan (if required).
