Counseling Intern (Unpaid)

Counseling interns complete their university learning contract and required on-site hours at Texans Can Academies, working closely with an assigned field placement supervisor. Interns will learn the role and function of Student Advocates and provide counseling supports for a mini-caseload. Weekly supervision is provided by the assigned field placement supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Intake, social services assessment, and supportive guidance
• Student and family outreach, field trips, and home visits
• Psycho-social referrals
• Punctual attendance according to assigned schedule
• Scheduling and attending weekly face-to-face supervision
• Completion of assigned duties and responsibilities
• Engaging assigned students, with follow-up on cases involving non-attendance
• Providing supportive guidance for students exhibiting academic or behavioral issues
• Seeking consultation and assistance from assigned field supervisor
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in counseling from a Texans Can Academies affiliated counseling program
• Referral by an affiliated counseling program for placement at Texans Can Academies
• Working to complete a foundations field placement
• Basic coursework in counseling practices
• Professional application of counseling values, principles, and techniques
• Ability to help students and families obtain tangible services
• Basic knowledge of supportive guidance, human development, and behavior
• Ability to display empathy and concern for others
• Sense of urgency applied to all assignments, tasks, and projects
• Willingness to learn and be coachable
• Basic skills in verbal and written expression
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Experience with high school age students
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Gmail, phone etiquette, basic customer service
• Ability to work well in teams or independently

Working Conditions

• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions
• Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer
