COUNSELING: Adjunct POOL

San Diego Community College District accepts applications for adjunct (part-time/substitute) positions on a continuous basis. While there may not be immediate openings, qualified applicants will be included in the adjunct pool for possible assignments in the fall, spring, and/or summer semesters. Applications are retained for approximately one year.

About the Role

This part-time position (15-20 hours per week for 40 weeks per year) focuses on enhancing mental health support for student veterans at San Diego City College. The Veterans Mental Health Counselor will serve a dual role with emphasis on psycho-education, outreach, early intervention/prevention, and community linkage, alongside direct clinical responsibilities. The role is funded through a two-year grant (January 2025 to December 2026) and requires availability during regular school hours to engage effectively with students and campus services.

Responsibilities

• Establish and expand partnerships with mental health providers, VA hospitals, county veterans service offices, and local/regional CSU and UC campus Veterans Resource Centers.
• Provide direct mental health support through individual counseling, group therapy, case management, and resource development.
• Lead and collaborate on outreach efforts to increase engagement with student veterans.
• Develop and deliver training programs to educate faculty, staff, and students on veterans' mental health, challenges, and best practices for support, including training campus stakeholders to become Veterans Allies.
• Collaborate with the Mental Health Peer Educator Coordinator to hire, train, and supervise student veterans serving as Mental Health Peer Educators, empowering them to support peers in transitioning to civilian life and training them as suicide prevention gatekeepers and stigma reduction ambassadors.
• Regularly report to the Grant or Program Coordinator on program progress and outcomes.
• Work closely with campus partners to prioritize veterans' mental health and wellness, integrating veteran-specific support services and resources through cross-departmental efforts.

Requirements

• Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from a regionally accredited institution. OR a bachelor's degree in one of the listed fields plus a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
• Licensed or license-eligible in California (MSW, MFT, PCC, or Psychologist) with experience in counseling, case management, or similar roles, preferably focused on veterans' mental health.
• Professional liability insurance required.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in outreach, training, and program development, particularly with diverse or underserved populations, with preference for veteran or veteran-affiliated roles.
• Clinical and/or personal experience working with veterans, including addressing PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, and mood disorders.
• Ability to build rapport with veteran students in one-on-one and group settings, fostering a supportive environment.
• Knowledge of local resources for veterans in San Diego and ability to connect students with relevant services.
• Expertise in clinical assessment, including evaluating suicidal ideation, lethality, and risk to self or others.
• Crisis intervention skills with demonstrated ability to manage high-risk situations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage and educate campus stakeholders.
• Culturally competent care for veterans and diverse populations.
• Strong organizational and administrative skills to meet grant deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
• Experience with program oversight, including managing peer-led initiatives and guiding student veterans in the Mental Health Peer Educator Program.
• Proficiency with technology, including clinical software and tools for case management, data collection, and report writing.
• Experience with data collection and reporting, including compiling and submitting regular reports as required by funding sources.

Pay

Salary placement is based on the Adjunct College Salary Schedules. Initial placement will be at the first class/step until official transcripts are submitted. Instructors with advanced coursework will be placed on the appropriate class and step effective the first month following receipt of official transcripts.

Schedule

• Part-time position: 15-20 hours per week for 40 weeks per year.
• Weekly commitment during academic semesters (Spring, Fall, and an 8-week Summer session).
• Must be available during regular school hours.

Conditions of Employment

• Submit official college transcripts (even if a degree is not a requirement).
• Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam (renewed every 4 years).
• Fingerprinting via Live Scan at the district's expense (clearance required before first day of employment).
• Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
