About the role
Under general supervision, the Public Works Inspector I or II performs a variety of technical and inspection work to ensure compliance with City standards, codes, and specifications for public works construction projects, including streets, water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
Responsibilities
- Inspect public works construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Perform field inspections of streets, sidewalks, water, sewer, and storm drain systems during construction, repair, or maintenance.
- Review and approve construction materials, methods, and workmanship for compliance with project requirements.
- Document and report inspection findings, including preparing reports, maintaining records, and issuing correction notices.
- Interpret and explain City standards, codes, and specifications to contractors, engineers, and the public.
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and other City departments to resolve construction-related issues.
- Monitor project progress and ensure timely completion of work.
- Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and project documentation.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- For Public Works Inspector I: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction inspection, public works, or a related field.
- For Public Works Inspector II: Minimum of four (4) years of experience in construction inspection, public works, or a related field, including at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and techniques related to public works projects.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with applicable local, state, and federal codes and regulations.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license and ability to obtain a City of Cottonwood driver’s permit.
- Certification as a Construction Inspector or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment (e.g., ICC, NICET, or equivalent).
Skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing inspections and documenting findings.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with contractors, engineers, and the public.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Proficiency in using computers and software for report writing, record-keeping, and project documentation.
- Physical ability to perform field inspections, including walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, and lifting equipment.
