Corrections Officer (Class 147)

About the role

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office seeks to attract high-quality, highly motivated, and goal-oriented candidates to become future leaders. New deputies start in the Jail Services Division, where they receive 360 hours of paid training in their first year. After completing the training and meeting other departmental requirements, officers complete their probationary period.

Responsibilities

• Processes inmates in/out of the Jail, maintaining all necessary paperwork.
• Verifies court commitments, warrants to discharge, and other court orders.
• Schedules inmate transportation between the Hamilton County Jail and other detention facilities.
• Fingerprints inmates and photographs all incoming inmates.
• Searches inmates according to established procedures, segregating as necessary and assigning/admitting inmates to cell blocks.
• Supervises inmates visually and/or by closed-circuit TV, ensuring their well-being and the security of the facility.
• Supervises trustees in their work assignments.
• Administers medication, issues jail/bed clothing, provides commissary items, and administers to all other inmate needs.
• Covers inmate movements inside and/or outside the Jail, arranging for medical/dental appointments, court appearances, professional evaluations, and transportation.
• Coordinates telephone calls and visitation for inmates.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One (1) year of experience performing public safety, security, corrections, or customer service duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• High School graduate or GED equivalent.
• At least 18 years of age, of good moral character.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States.
• No conviction of a misdemeanor involving immoral character (theft, DV, etc.) or any felony.
• Drug-free for a minimum of 12 months.
• Passes a criminal and personal background check.
• Be in good physical condition and free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the responsibilities of a Corrections Officer.
• Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.
• Passes written examination, physical fitness assessment, and medical examination.

Appearance Standards

• No visible tattoos or body art on the face, head, neck, or hands.
• No body piercing or alteration to any area of the body that is visible and is a deviation from normal anatomical features and that is not medically required.
