About the role
The Kentucky Department of Corrections seeks a Corrections Education Specialist II to support the mission of preparing offenders for successful reentry through academic achievement and work readiness skills.
Responsibilities
- Provides targeted instruction (classroom and performance based) to students and, or, adult inmates in a Correctional Setting, which includes promoting education during inmate orientation and to the general population.
- Maintains order and discipline in the classroom.
- Develops lesson plans on educational topics within assigned correctional facility; adheres to approved curriculum, expected outcomes and program requirements; and submits all transcripts and documents to the appropriate agencies for review and approval.
- Advises students as needed and assesses their attainment using reliable criteria.
- Maintains federal and state reports regarding student assessment and progress.
- Captures appropriate referrals when needed.
- Captures special programs regarding educational needs and assessments within the Department.
- Enters daily attendance into the Kentucky Offender Management System (KOMS) and student information into the KY Adult Education Reporting System (KAERS).
- Maintains an accurate and complete inventory of all classroom equipment, tools, computers, and toxic-caustic supplies used within the classroom, and is responsible for monitoring student use of these items.
- Participates in professional development activities to improve teaching skills.
- Attends necessary educational staff meetings.
- Actively involved in continuing career development.
- Provides guidance and assistance to Corrections Education Specialist I’s and other staff.
- Performs other assigned duties as required.
Requirements
- Graduate of a college or university with a Master's Degree in education (academic or vocational).

- Ability to complete work related activities in a professional manner.
- Able to multitask with the ability to plan, pay attention to detail, think critically and analyze data to forecast positive outcomes.
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the Department, facility, and Division.
