About the Role

Corrections Agents provide investigative services to the court/releasing authority and supervisory and/or referral services to individuals committed to the Department of Corrections in order to protect public safety and facilitate law-abiding behavior. This position has contact with criminal justice-involved individuals.

This vacancy may be filled at the Corrections Agent, Corrections Agent Senior, or Corrections Agent Career level. Minnesota county employees working as a Probation Officer/Senior/Career may be eligible for an intergovernmental transfer or hire to a comparable level as a Corrections Agent/Senior/Career. Current or former Corrections Agent/Senior/Career employees in the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) may also be eligible for appointment to this position at a comparable level.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assessments of individuals to determine/recommend appropriate supervision levels.
  • Prepare case plans and supervise individuals to monitor behavior and compliance with probation/releasing authority conditions.
  • Complete progress reports and apprehension/detention orders.
  • Testify in court as needed.
  • Prepare diagnostic, pre- and post-dispositional investigation reports on individuals to be used by the courts, correctional staff, and releasing authority for sentencing, case planning, and releasing decisions.

Work Schedule

The days and hours of work will vary, including non-traditional work hour requirements. Intensive Supervised Release (ISR) Agents work four (4) ten (10) hour shifts.

Travel

Travel for this position may be up to 80% of the time.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of work experience with clients from a diverse background in the fields of corrections, social work, social services, education, chemical dependency, mental health, residential treatment, or related field.
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience; completion of an associate’s degree may substitute for six (6) months of experience.
  • Valid driver's license.

Qualifications

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be further assessed on the following:

  • The ability to document and maintain client case records.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to represent the Minnesota Department of Corrections or county in the community; maintain effective working relationships; and work with a diverse, and at times, adversarial or resistive clientele.
  • Oral and written communication skills, sufficient to speak in public, testify in court, and write clear and concise reports.
  • The ability to make case decisions, set priorities, and schedule/use time effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher in Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Education, Law, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or a Human Services related field with an emphasis in corrections/criminal justice.
  • Experience working with the Minnesota Department of Corrections as a Corrections Agent or with another jurisdiction as a Probation Officer providing supervision in the community.
  • Experience working with the Minnesota Department of Corrections as a Corrections Security Caseworker or with another jurisdiction as a Case Manager providing case management services in the community.
  • Experience working in a criminal justice/human service setting.
  • Experience completing risk/needs assessments.
  • Knowledge and application of case planning and intervention techniques based on research-based principles for long-standing client behavior change.
  • Demonstrated skills in utilizing motivational interviewing.

Physical Requirements

The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete respirator clearance.

Additional Requirements

  • The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations, and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections policy.
  • Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
  • Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
  • New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
  • The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) does not participate in E-Verify. The DOC will not sponsor applicants for work visas, including F-1 STEM OPT extensions. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Pay

  • Corrections Agent Salary Range: $26.12 - $37.91 / hourly; $54,538 - $79,156 / annually
  • Corrections Agent Senior Salary Range: $28.75 - $42.16 / hourly; $60,030 - $88,030 / annually
  • Corrections Agent Career Salary Range: $32.97 - $48.60 / hourly; $68,841 - $101,476 / annually
