CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT

About the role

Under the direction of the Camp Commander, the Correctional Sergeant (Assistant Camp Commander) is responsible for:

• Supervising the security, health, and welfare of the incarcerated individual population.
• Monitoring and supervising custody staff, including providing training and performance evaluations.
• Assisting in the maintenance of an efficient camp operation that satisfies all legal mandates, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), and Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) policies and procedures.
• Serving as a first-line supervisor and Strike Team Leader when required.
• Analyzing situations accurately and adopting effective courses of action.
• Being available for emergency assignments.
• Conducting themselves professionally at all times to uphold the Department’s reputation.
• Keeping abreast of camp and department policies and procedures, and attending all scheduled training and meetings.

Individuals eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered.

Working Conditions

The primary mission of Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is to provide housing, programs, and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for training and placing male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program and administers male camps throughout California.

Requirements

• Knowledge of principles and practices of correctional administration, rehabilitation, and methods of discipline as applied to persons under restraint.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of personnel supervision, training, and discipline.
• Knowledge of First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to provide first responder/emergency medical care.
• Knowledge of the use and care of firearms for the safety of staff, incarcerated persons, and the public.

Pay

Classification: Correctional Sergeant

• Salary Range A: $8,184.00 - $10,292.00 per month
• Salary Range J: $8,696.00 - $10,935.00 per month

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) requires each full-time employee to receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027. Salaries listed do not reflect this change.
