Location: Nashville, TN – DeBerry Special Needs Facility, Department of Correction. Full-time position requiring a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
  • Three years of varied full-time adult or youth security work, including:
    • One year of supervisory or inmate relations coordinator experience.
    • One year of adult correctional security experience.
  • Qualifying full-time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must:
    • Be willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
    • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application.
    • Be a citizen of the United States.
    • Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation.
    • Complete a criminal history disclosure form and release all records to the appointing authority.
    • Supply a fingerprint sample for a TBI criminal history records check.
    • Have no felony convictions or domestic assault convictions, and no dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
    • Pass a physical examination and psychological evaluation consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • Pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
    • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment.
    • Successfully complete all prescribed training at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any online training upon appointment.

About the Role

The Correctional Sergeant performs correctional supervisory work of average difficulty, overseeing the custody, transportation, and rehabilitation of inmates. This role may require working any shift and differs from Correctional Corporal by including shift supervisor responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise or perform searches of inmates and vehicles, and conduct cell shakedowns for contraband to ensure safety.
  • Respond as a first responder to emergencies such as medical needs, escapes, fires, and natural disasters.
  • Prepare records and reports including shift reports, daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate passes, and daily population records.
  • Restrain, secure, or control inmates using restraint devices as necessary.
  • Plan and coordinate activities of assigned subordinates to meet operational and strategic priorities.
  • Instruct employees and provide on-the-job training, including emergency situation training.
  • Inspect the correctional facility for compliance with state-mandated policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accountability for assigned equipment such as handcuffs, keys, radios, weapons, and security devices.
  • Observe inmates to ensure adherence to established policies and procedures, recording incidents and disciplinary actions in the State’s database.
  • Communicate daily activities regarding staff and inmates to supervisors and subordinates.

Monthly: $5,100.00 - $7,646.00
Annually: $61,200.00 - $91,752.00
