About the role

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, record, review, investigate and prepare responses to inmate grievances filed at the central office level.
  • Ensure the multi-level grievance processes are being followed, and responses address the issue(s) raised.
  • Work well with others, possess good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to formulate responses at the highest level of the agency.
  • Work independently, have extensive knowledge and understanding of the Offender Management System to research and interpret information contained in furtherance of investigating complaints and responding appropriately, and objectively assess the complaint and steps taken in response to grievance.
  • Manage daily operations of TDOC programs and services.
  • Conduct independent reviews of hearings and make decisions utilizing experience and understanding of policy, evidence, regulations, and documentation.
  • Conduct hearings or have extensive knowledge of the process, weigh evidence, and determine witness value/non-value during a hearing.
  • Modify and correct disciplinary keying errors upon verifying legitimacy of request, local approvals obtained, and supporting evidence.
  • Serve as a trainer of staff in the disciplinary process and serve as a subject matter expert in the area.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to staff and executive and division leadership as requested directly related to grievances.
  • Present grievance related data upon request to leadership.
  • Oversee, coordinate, and manage the daily operations of the grievance program.
  • Streamline the grievance administrative processes and programs.
  • Review grievances from all facilities at Level 3 for the central office level.
  • Review disciplinary infractions to ensure policy compliance.
  • Review and assess adjudicated disciplinary hearings entered in TOMIS.
  • Conduct training with disciplinary chairpersons and grievance coordinators across the state.
  • Monitor and respond to external requests related to areas of responsibility.

Requirements

Education must be from an accredited institution. Must have an associate degree with three (3) years of correctional experience.
