Correctional Officer I (Northwest State Correctional Facility)

The Vermont Department of Corrections seeks to fill a Correctional Officer I position at Northwest State Correctional Facility. This role involves a variety of duties including maintaining security, supervising inmates, and providing support services. Responsibilities
- Observe and assist in the duties of a correctional officer at the correctional facility.
- Participate in 80 hours of onsite training at the Vermont Correctional Academy.
- Work shifts based on seniority and facility needs, typically a 2-2-3 rotation schedule.
- Perform tasks such as monitoring inmate activities, enforcing rules, and responding to emergencies.
- Ensure the safety and security of the facility and its occupants.
- Provide support services to inmates as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2 years of full-time work experience, or a combination of 1 year of college and 1 year of full-time work experience.
- Or, 2 years of college level course work.
Qualifications
- Adequate physical condition to perform essential job functions.
- Experience working in a correctional setting preferred.
- Experience in military settings is also preferred.
Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
- Knowledge of correctional facilities and inmate management.
- Basic computer skills for job-related tasks.

Pay
The starting step 1 rate for pay grade 19 is $23.58 per hour, and the step 15 rate is $36.16 per hour.
Schedule
The 2-2-3 schedule provides a better work-life balance with predictable work hours, flexibility, and longer periods of rest. You will work two consecutive days, followed by two days off, then three consecutive days, and two days off, repeating this cycle.
