Base pay range: $49,682 - $50,704 (minimum and maximum based on years of current agency service plus institution incentives). Not all individuals may qualify for the highest tier of adjustments and incentives.
Responsibilities
- Provides security, custody, and control of inmates in a correctional setting, primarily assigned to the cafeteria.
- Maintains control in inmate dorms, cafeteria, work sites, and surrounding areas.
- Instructs and directs inmates assigned to various work details.
- Maintains and reports inmate count and daily logs; prepares and submits miscellaneous reports.
- Maintains surveillance and searches for contraband.
- Maintains and inspects buildings for cleanliness and sanitation; requisitions and directs issuance of supplies, tools, and equipment; maintains inventory of equipment.
- Escorts visitors and civilian employees through the assigned facility.
- Ensures inmates receive prescribed treatment, including medical and behavioral prescriptions.
- Controls gate tower or other special posts.
- Makes prescribed security inspections and searches of specified buildings, building contents, grounds, vehicles, and people; takes necessary action.
- Maintains and operates security devices such as gates, doors, weapons, and mechanical devices.
- Instructs and counsels officers concerning duty requirements.
- Investigates inmate/resident complaints and takes appropriate action.
- Serves as backup for any dorm/building dispute requiring assistance and crisis intervention; makes reports to appropriate personnel.
Requirements
- U.S. citizen.
- 18 years or older.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Tattoos must not be offensive, gang-related, or visibly located on the face or head. Neck tattoos evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Must pass a medical assessment administered by SCDC.
- Must successfully complete the Correctional Officer Basic Certification Course within six months of placement into the position.
