Correctional Officer (entry and senior level)
About the role
The Gwinnett County Department of Corrections is seeking Correctional Officers to join their team. The department is dedicated to promoting community safety through maintaining a secure environment and providing quality services.
Responsibilities
- Intervene during disturbances, riots, and related emergencies to maintain or gain control of offenders
- Handle stressful situations according to departmental policy/procedure
- Restrain combative/uncooperative offenders
- Conduct shakedowns of offenders' property for unauthorized contraband
- Provide transportation for offenders to outside appointments, work details, and in times of emergency
- Interact with offenders in an open dormitory setting
- Maintain accountability of offenders
- Conduct official counts depending on qualifications
Requirements
- U.S. Citizen
- At least 21 years old
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent education
- Valid driver’s license from state of residency
- Able to work an on-call rotation and emergency after hours, weekends, and/or holidays
- Able to successfully complete the five-week Basic Correctional Officer Training Course
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Associate degree: base salary starts at $49,102.00, with a 3% education incentive
- Bachelor's degree: base salary starts at $50,575.06, with a 6% education incentive
Benefits
- 12-step pay system with 4% annual raises
- 5% shift differential pay for evening and morning shifts
- $4,300 hiring incentive for Correctional Officer and $4,700 for Sr. Correctional Officer
Pay
Starting at $49,102.00 (base salary) with a high school diploma or GED, and increasing to $52,048.12 (base salary + 6% education incentive) for a bachelor's degree. Incentives include 3% pay incentive for an associate degree and 6% pay incentive for a bachelor's degree.
Schedule
This is a safety-sensitive position requiring a pre-employment drug screen and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace policy.
Grade
The grade for the Correctional Officer position is CR213 and for the Correctional Officer Senior is CR223.
