About the role
The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC), has an opening for a Correctional Industries Supervisor 1 (General Industries) position at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, CT. This hazardous duty position is located within the Metal Shop responsible for producing various metal products including picnic table frames, aluminum signpost frames, plow pins, sign and cone holders, pre-warning sign frames, heil dump conveyors, pipe gates, commissary carts, wing carts, truck boxes, metal silverware holders, and many more.
Responsibilities
- Supervises and instructs inmates in skilled craftwork found in the metal fabrication industries, methods and techniques of manufacturing process/service, proper use of tools/materials, necessary safety rules/procedures maintenance and cleaning/repairing of equipment.
- Assigns work to inmates.
- Generates and maintains cost reports, production inventory data and time records.
- Maintains discipline and enforces security measures within assigned areas.
- Conducts performance reviews of inmates.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements
- Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involved in the areas of production, production planning and/or quality control which must have included some responsibility for the production output of other workers.
- Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
Skills
- Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment involved in occupational area.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of production planning and control.
- Considerable interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Ability to interpret plans, blueprints and diagrams where required.
- Keep records and make reports.
- Perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations.
- Train, instruct and supervise inmates in methods and techniques of the trade.
- Utilize computer software.
- Supervisory ability.

Pay
- $62,103 - $81,142/year *(New state employees start at the minimum)
Schedule
- Full-time, Monday-Friday schedule (36.25 hours per week)
- First-shift; hours are 6:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
- On-site position; not eligible for hybrid work.
