Correctional Health Nurse III

This position is located in the Medical Section of the Adult Detention Facility and includes a $10,000 sign-on bonus for fully qualified new county employees.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, counsel, guide, and direct subordinates in the administration of appropriate and effective inmate health care.
• Participate in the development of procedures for the delivery of health care.
• Oversee and administer routine and emergency health care delivered to inmates.
• Ensure subordinates adhere to agency operating procedures and health care standards adopted by the Virginia Board of Corrections, the American Correctional Association, the Virginia Board of Health Professionals, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
• Ensure adequate staff coverage for all medical workstations.
• Ensure preliminary physical examinations are completed as mandated by NCCHC.
• Ensure blood for DNA analysis is drawn.
• Ensure medications are properly receipted, stored, distributed, administered, and documented.
• Review orders directed by the staff physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, or psychiatrist, and manage the administration of such orders.
• Serve as the resource nurse for the health care team and as quality improvement nurse as designated.
• Make final decisions regarding care or treatment of inmates that can be resolved at the shift level, deferring to higher-level medical personnel as needed.
• Discuss and counsel inmates on complaints and grievances related to health care.
• Educate and counsel inmates on special health care needs.
• Consult with inmates’ families and attorneys regarding health care delivery.
• Ensure proper protective equipment is worn and used by staff and oversee the proper disposal and destruction of soiled and/or contaminated clothing and equipment.
• Evaluate the work performance of subordinates.

Requirements

• Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
• Three years of post-licensure experience as a nurse, including two years in an equivalent health care setting.
• At least one year of supervisory experience.

Certificates and Licenses Required

• Current license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (required within 12 months).

Necessary Special Requirements

• Completion of a criminal background check, credit check, polygraph exam, psychological exam, pre-employment medical evaluation, and clearance from the National Practitioners Database.
• Must be able to work a shift work schedule that includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be emergency/essential services personnel and report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Emergency room or critical care nursing experience.
• Certified Correctional Health Professional Registered Nurse (CCHP-RN) certification.
• Experience working as a nurse in a correctional facility.
• Experience providing hands-on health care.

Schedule

12.5-hour squad schedule, working 15 days per month, equaling 87.5 hours per two-week pay period. Day or night shift depending on agency needs. Additional pay may include night and evening differential, foreign language stipend, holidays, and environmental stipend.
