About Indiana State Prison

Indiana State Prison is a level-four maximum-security facility located in Michigan City, Indiana, with a capacity of more than 2,400 incarcerated adult males. As the oldest correctional facility in the state, it operates on a secured 24-acre campus with ten manned towers. The prison grounds also include a level-two facility with a capacity of 385 incarcerated adult males. Staff maintain a clean, orderly environment while prioritizing safety and security. Programs available to incarcerated individuals support personal development and re-entry preparation where applicable. The facility provides a structured setting for individuals with long sentences or those convicted of violent offenses.

Role Overview

As the Correctional Classification Specialist, you will coordinate classification functions, including incarcerated individuals' admission/orientation, intake/release, monitoring reentry/classification boards, and managing records/documents for incarcerated individual packets. You will ensure all incarcerated individuals with medical or program classifications are identified and appropriately assigned.

A Day In The Life

  • Review recently received offender packets and recommend initial classification level.
  • Conduct initial intake classification review, provide information to the immediate supervisor, and recommend initial assignments.
  • Review classification designations at the facility level to assign or recommend final security and custody levels to the immediate supervisor or central office analyst.
  • Finalize Classification Hearing Results of offender job changes, program changes, and facility transfer recommendations.
  • Serve as designee in the classification department in the absence of the Classification Supervisor.
  • Serve as designee to facilitate supervision of offender release duties, court order preparation, and Interstate Compact issues as needed.

What You'll Need For Success

  • Basic knowledge of the correctional release process, including sentencing and credit time statutes and sentencing alternatives.
  • Extensive knowledge of Indiana Department of Correction facilities, programs available, and security requirements and criteria.
  • Ability to learn Offender Management System and related software programs.
  • Ability to complete related training offered by Correctional Training Institute.

To continue employment, you must complete the Certification of Credit Time Calculations and Annual Inservice Training. A degree is not required; however, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and at least 3+ years of experience in corrections, criminology, parole or probation work, or related areas applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered. Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports

This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.

Pay

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00.
