About the role
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department seeks correction/jail officers to ensure the care, custody and control of inmates in accordance with Department policies and procedures. Officers are supervised and directed by superior officers and must be able to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions.
Responsibilities
- Tour assigned areas (which requires periodic climbing of approximately 10-15 stairs)
- Observe inmate activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors
- Identify inmates with behavioral, medical or other issues
- Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions and harm to inmates, visitors and staff
- Search inmates, visitors, cells and other areas for weapons and contraband
- Maintain and record inmate counts, cell assignments and other pertinent information
- Escort inmates within and outside the institution
- Use and maintain keys and other equipment
- Supervise inmate work details
- Respond to emergency situations, including incidents involving inmate violence
Requirements
- Ability to work any established shift
- Regular, punctual and predictable attendance at assigned workplace and post
- Knowledge of, compliance with, and enforcement of Department policies and procedures
- Patrol assigned areas for extended time periods while performing general security duties
- Obey moderately complex oral and written orders
- Observe inmate and staff activity in person and on closed circuit TV monitors
- Search cells, footlockers, housing units, yards and other areas
- Frisk inmates and perform strip searches
- Listen for possible disturbances
- Maintain inmate counts, make accurate written entries in log books, and prepare accurate written reports
- Open and close doors, cells and gates either manually or electronically
- Communicate orally and in writing
- Use communication, emergency and other equipment
- Apply handcuffs, other restraints and safety devices
- Perform restraining and self-defense techniques
- Lift emergency equipment (e.g. fire extinguisher, defibrillator) and perform assisted lifting of inmates
- Participate in training
- Deal effectively with inmates one-on-one and in large groups
- Deal calmly and effectively with stressful situations, including emergencies
- Exercise sound judgment
Qualifications
- Ability to sit or stand periodically for 8 hours
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
- Ability to carry up to 5 pounds
- Ability to climb stairs
- Ability to walk and run short distances
- Ability to write or type
- Ability to physically restrain a violent inmate
