About the role
The Union County Department of Corrections is seeking a Part-Time Correction Officer to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed in a 24/7 penal setting.
Responsibilities
- Enforce all rules and regulations of the jail; maintain the safety and security of the general public, facility staff, and inmates.
- Take custody of new arrivals; escort inmates to various parts of the jail facility.
- Receive and process incoming inmates; explain jail rules, regulations, and procedures; search prisoners; conduct property inventory; secure personal property.
- Prepare in-processing documentation; make photographs and fingerprint records of incoming prisoners; obtain background reports; conduct book-in interviews; document personal histories.
- Answer questions from prisoners; assign jail housing; issue clothing, bedding, and personal hygiene items.
- Monitor inmate activities inside the facility on a continual basis, including meals, cleaning activities, exercise, work/cleanup detail, recreation, visitation, religious services, personal hygiene, and related activities.
- Take and record periodic headcounts of inmates; conduct medical/sick call to distribute medications; control movements of inmates; assign work detail to inmates; manage inmate workers/trustees.
- Transport prisoners to medical facilities, other law enforcement facilities, or other locations as assigned.
- Coordinate, monitor, or perform functions to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of inmates, including serving meals, providing clothing/bedding, medical aid/supplies, coordinating visitation and telephone communications, or distributing mail.
- Maintain security of the facility; perform periodic security checks; monitor video surveillance equipment; check door locks; control door operations; conduct emergency fire drills; conduct jail shakedowns; search inmates, cells, buildings, and grounds to locate/remove contraband and maintain security.
- Assist in controlling/restraining violent or unruly prisoners.
- Monitor base and two-way radio as assigned; respond to prisoners, employees, or facility emergencies by operating fire suppression equipment, administering medications, and providing first aid and/or CPR when needed.
- Conduct release of prisoners per established procedures; prepare out-processing documentation; run reports on inmates; release prisoners upon bonding out, for case termination, or for probation placement.
- Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information by telephone or in person from inmates, the general public, court personnel, medical staff, attorneys, clergy, officers, employees, and supervisors.
- Ensure inmates with special needs receive required attention, including those with contagious diseases, suicidal tendencies, or special medical problems.
- Mediate disputes between inmates and/or staff members; counsel and/or discipline inmates as required.
- Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and County operations, improve job performance, and stay updated on changing policies, procedures, codes, and laws.
- Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, charts, spreadsheets, daily logs, security block checks, pass on information, commitment sheets, medical treatment consent and questionnaires, inmate receipt vouchers, property releases, cell inspection reports, disciplinary reports, suicide watch reports, or other documents.
- Receive and process various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, DC7X, bench warrants, court orders, detainers, schedules, medical documents, memos, policies, procedures, directories, reference materials, personnel handbooks, inmate handbooks, drug handbooks, master copy files, work release schedules, laws, or other documentation.
- Communicate with supervisor, County employees, inmates, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, clergy, counselors, the public, and others as needed to coordinate work activities, review work status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operate a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
- Must complete training from the Pennsylvania State Correction Academy to become DOC Certified.
Pre-Employment Requirements
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
- Successful completion of a drug and alcohol screening.
- Successful completion of a reference check.
- Employment is contingent upon meeting all pre-employment requirements.
Pay
$19.04/hr – $21.10/hr (depending on DOC Certification and job experience).
Schedule
Part-time; various shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed; 24/7 penal setting; overtime occasionally available and/or mandatory; shift changes may occur with limited notice.
