Responsibilities
- Providing high quality and timely legal advice and counsel to Legal Team members and business partners on employment and other legal issues pertaining to the operations and continued growth and expansion of our home warranty business and related businesses.
- Providing legal support to the People Team regarding employment and labor-related matters, which may include employee relations issues, policy development and employee benefit plan compliance.
- Assuring company compliance with federal, state and local labor and employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, state and local wage and hour laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, Title VII and ERISA.
- Willingness to support as needed a range of legal projects beyond employment focus areas, including commercial and consumer litigation, contracts, marketing, regulatory, corporate governance and legal operations in support of the Company’s strategic priorities and legal objectives.
- Developing strategies to mitigate risks and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, especially with regard to legal and employment processes.
- Assisting as needed on labor and employment issues for the company’s international operations.
- Identifying and analyzing legal issues, and effectively communicating sound, understandable legal recommendations to Legal Team colleagues and the appropriate business team members.
- Actively participating in a collaborative manner in cross-functional business teams to identify, evaluate and resolve complex business issues and risks.
- Working with and supervising outside counsel and managing legal budgets, as appropriate.
- Willingness to handle other projects and matters as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
- J.D. with at least 5 to 7 years of legal experience, preferably in a large law firm or in-house legal department handling employment matters and issues across multiple states and jurisdictions, although willing to consider strong candidates with other experiences;
- Expertise operating in a complex regulatory environment and/or an innovative or rapidly-growing company or similar business venture is strongly preferred;
- Top academic record and large firm experience preferred;
- Creative problem solver with customer focus and “can do” attitude;
- Ability to multi-task with a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines within a changing, fast‐paced environment;
- Team player with strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;
- Able to easily build rapport and the gain the confidence and respect of peers and business leaders;
- Possess strong issue identification and problem-solving skills;
- Good sense of humor and willingness to laugh;
- Good standing in a state bar with the ability to join the Tennessee bar as in-house counsel.
