About the Role

This position serves in a leadership capacity within the Department of School Safety and Security. The Corporal provides security and takes appropriate action to prevent injury to students, employees, and visitors while on or in Board of Education property or facility. They report to the Principal and the assigned Zone Sergeant as requested, assist in controlling access to buildings and grounds, and ensure students report to their assigned instructional areas.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a role model, mentor, and provides direct supervision of assigned School Resource Officers (SROs).
  • Plans and implements School Safety Readiness plans.
  • Serves as advisor to Zone Sergeants and Operations Lieutenant.
  • Patrols Board of Education facilities and properties to ensure a safe environment during both operating and non-operative hours.
  • Assists with training opportunities for staff and the school leadership team in developing and implementing security procedures.
  • Provides support with investigations of serious incidents.
  • Assists in ensuring safety and security at special events such as athletic events, graduations, and other ceremonies, including preparation of annual schedules for these events.
  • Oversees compliance with implemented strategies, goals, and directives set forth by School Safety and Security.
  • Reports all complaints, issues, or concerns to the Zone Sergeant or Operations Lieutenant.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic law, including criminal and civil statutes, police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement.
  • Works with principals, administrators, and other school personnel regarding juvenile or adult offenses and arbitrates for restitution.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations and makes written reports of incidents taking place on Board of Education properties.
  • Works with students, teachers, school leadership staff, and governmental and community members.
  • Knows procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others, including behavior management techniques.
  • Enforces Board policies and rules, state and local laws, and takes appropriate actions when violations are reported or observed.
  • Conducts random and requested searches consistent with policies and procedures and makes written reports.
  • Participates as a member of the School Emergency Management Team.
  • Collects and preserves physical evidence at the scene(s) of incidents as required by circumstances.
  • Testifies and presents evidence in criminal court, any court of competent jurisdiction, or at a school disciplinary tribunal.
  • Upon request of school or county police or other legal authority, may hold suspects for appropriate agency and confiscate physical evidence.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by the Associate Superintendent of Academic Services or supervisor to achieve efficient operation.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma; Associate’s degree or considerable college coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related field desirable.
  • Must be certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) as a Police Officer.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license or equivalent.
  • First aid and CPR certification or willingness to acquire within a specified time.
  • A minimum of eighteen months of experience as a School Resource Officer (SRO).
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude.

Skills

  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Able to stand and walk to complete security patrol duties, including outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
  • Critical thinking, excellent oral and written communication, and human relation skills.
  • Professionalism, interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of basic law, including criminal and civil statutes, police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement.
  • Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons.
  • Stamina and physical ability to spend extended periods standing and walking.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (100 lbs. regularly and over 100 lbs. as needed) and frequent climbing.

Schedule

  • 235 days worked per year (12 months).
  • Must agree to work an eight-hour shift out of any twenty-four hours, seven days a week.
  • Required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as assigned by the Director of School Safety to provide maximum security coverage.
  • Occasionally required to work overtime with appropriate compensation.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

The work environment is usually moderate in noise level. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and is frequently required to walk, stand, and sit. Special requirements include:

  • Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons.
  • Stamina and physical ability to spend extended periods standing and walking to complete security patrol duties.
  • Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
  • Required to wear designated security uniforms.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (100 lbs. regularly and over 100 lbs. as needed) and frequent climbing.
