Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist the Director in assessing, planning and coordinating the overall functioning of the Therapeutic Recreation Services, Volunteer Services, Chaplaincy, Computer Lab, Resident Library, Resident Gym
- Assist the Director in developing and implementing Policies & Procedures to assure compliance with regulatory agencies: NYSDOH Article 28.
- Provide assistance in recruiting, supervising, and evaluating Therapeutic Recreation staff as needed.
- Supervises the office administration and office record keeping activities of the department.
- Attend committee/interdisciplinary/resident-oriented meetings as assigned to represent the Department.
- Assist the Director in conducting staff meetings/huddles and/or in services as needed on a weekly basis. In the absence of the Director, may facilitate Staff meetings.
- Review facility-wide therapeutic recreation calendars, reviewing programming and recommending operational changes, if warranted, to meet the needs of the resident population.
- Can be assigned to generate or complete reports and memos as needed.
- Lead program planning and program evaluation for the department
- Reviews staffing patterns, program evaluation, patient/resident satisfaction surveys, and clinical documentation for problem areas and makes recommendations to Director to implement changes.
- Initiates, monitors and evaluates the Performance Improvement program for the department.
- Assists the department staff in ordering and maintaining supplies or materials necessary for appropriate activity programming.
- Assists the Director in seeking out new and innovative programs or resources that are applicable to the facility population and works closely with the Director in the implementation process.
- Assists the Director in assuring that all documentation and records such as monthly schedules, daily attendance, unit programs, initial assessments, progress notes, statistics, etc. are maintained in a timely fashion.
- Makes suggestions in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
- Prepares all required weekly and monthly reports/statistics.
- Performs as Liaison with the Department of Special Education
- Responsible for recruitment, orientation, and placement services for residents to appropriate community services
- Provides crisis intervention and behavior modification for residents on Computer Lab program
- Acts as liaison between the Therapeutic Recreation Department and Community Agencies (ie., OPWDD)
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public Administration, Business Administration, Social Work, Psychology or Rehabilitation Counseling; and one (1) year of full-time experience in medically-oriented health care and medical support systems environment;
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines listed in “1” above; and two(2)years of full-time experience in medically-oriented health care and medical support systems environment;
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience, in which each year of relevant training and/or experience can be substituted for 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university. However, all applicants must at least have a Bachelor’s degree.

- Program Development and Evaluation: Strong skills in planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation programs that meet the individualized needs and goals of residents.
- Organizational Skills: Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects, calendars, and daily operational tasks effectively and efficiently.
- Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to assess situations, identify issues, and make sound decisions promptly.
- Cultural Competency: Understanding and respecting the diverse cultural and social backgrounds of residents and their families.
- Technological Proficiency: Comfortable using essential office software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and specialized software for documentation, scheduling, and program management.
