Cook (Temporary - Hyde County)

About the role

This is a temporary position located at 2 Irvin Garrish Hwy., Ocracoke – Hyde County, with the Department of Public Instruction. The role provides an opportunity to gain exposure to agency culture, processes, and procedures, supporting the Governor's Job Ready initiative to expand temporary skill sets for future state or private sector employment.

Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Permanent and time‑limited NC State Government employees must separate from their current position to work in a temporary role, and each temporary employee may hold only one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and cook all food during scheduled times.
• Assist the Food Services Supervisor with menu planning, development, and recipe research.
• Maintain cleaning standards and ensure the food service area is clean and sanitary at all times.
• May be required to obtain ServSafe certification.
• Set up the dining room for meals and ensure food is presented appealingly while adhering to the highest health standards.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and/or experience in food preparation that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade, equivalent to one year of experience in a commercial and/or institutional setting. Candidates may qualify through an equivalent combination of education and experience as outlined in the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide.

Pay

Hourly rate of $20.00, based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application. Effective July 1 2025, candidates meeting the minimum education and experience listed in the class specification are eligible.
