Cook II (Lifting & Carrying) - Kapolei, Oahu
About the role
The Cook II (Lifting & Carrying) position at the Hale Hoomalu Juvenile Detention Facility in Kapolei, Oahu, requires work beyond regularly scheduled hours to assist with meal preparation. This includes working evenings, days off, and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Performs cooking activities at a cooking station in a large kitchen or has responsibility for all cooking activities in a small kitchen.
- Serves as a supervisor for kitchen and cook helpers.
- Prepares modified or special diet meals and new areas of cooking, such as determining the best use of leftovers.
- Prepares soft, salt-free, allergy or puree diets.
Requirements
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in quantity cooking.
- Thorough knowledge of all types of food and cooking methods to perform general cooking duties with little or no supervision.
- Simple and routine tasks include assisting in the actual cooking of meals, cooking meats, fish, and poultry, and preparing baked products.
- More difficult tasks include preparing modified or special diet meals and new areas of cooking.
Qualifications
- Completion of a course in cooking or baking and cooking in a technical school with substantial training in quantity cooking.
- Completion of a course in cafeteria management in a technical school with substantial training in quantity cooking.
Skills
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 70 pounds.

Pay
Salary rate effective July 1, 2026.
Schedule
These positions require work beyond regularly scheduled work hours on short notice to assist with the preparation of meals for a 24 hour/7 day secure detention facility; this may require work beyond 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a work week including evenings, days off and holidays.
Selective Certification Requirement - Lifting & Carrying
The Cook II positions require the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical Requirements
You must be able to kneel, squat, reach above the head numerous times each day to reach for food, kitchen utensils (i.e., pots, pans, etc.) and other items as needed. You must also be able to stand for up to 8 hours every day.
Working with Youths
These positions supervise and instruct juvenile residents assigned to work in the kitchen.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement
In accordance with the PREA Federal law, the Hawai`i State Judiciary shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with detainees in juvenile facilities and lockups, with inmates detained in a prison or jail, or with residents of community confinement facilities who: Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution; Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in (B) above; or Has been the subject of a substantiated allegation of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
