About the role

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious, delicious, well‑balanced meals for residents. This includes planning menus, cooking to established recipes and dietary guidelines, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and adhering to food safety regulations. The role is vital to meeting residents’ dietary needs and preferences while fostering a warm, inviting dining experience.

Responsibilities

• Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook meals according to established menus, recipes, and dietary guidelines; ensure attractive presentation and quality standards.
• Menu Planning: Assist in planning weekly menus that cater to residents’ dietary needs, preferences, and special restrictions or medical conditions.
• Food Safety: Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper handling, storage, and cleanliness protocols; maintain a clean, organized kitchen.
• Resident Interaction: Engage with residents in a friendly, respectful manner; address meal preferences or dietary concerns and make accommodations as needed.
• Inventory Management: Monitor food inventory levels, manage ordering of supplies, and ensure ingredients are fresh and used within shelf life.
• Kitchen Maintenance: Maintain kitchen equipment and appliances in good working condition; report maintenance issues to the Food Services Manager.
• Team Collaboration: Work effectively with kitchen aides and dietary aides to ensure smooth meal service; participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive work environment.
• Documentation: Complete and maintain required documentation such as food temperature logs and cleaning schedules to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; culinary certification or relevant vocational training is a plus.
• Experience: Previous experience as a cook, preferably in a healthcare or assisted living setting, is desirable.
• Culinary Skills: Strong food preparation and presentation skills; knowledge of food safety practices and dietary requirements for elderly residents.
• Personal Attributes: Compassionate, patient demeanor with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a team and manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.

Physical Requirements

• Push, pull, and lift at least 30 pounds
• Frequent transporting of residents in wheelchairs
• Stand, walk, stoop, and bend for periods of up to eight hours (with breaks per employee handbook)
• Ability to work in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat and sharp utensils
