About the Role
Supervise approximately 2–40 people in the daily production of quality corrugated products in a safe, productive manner with minimum waste. Cross-train employees in key positions.
Responsibilities
- Maintain quality, efficiencies, and production levels set by management and communicate these standards to staff.
- Report quality concerns to Converting and Plant Superintendent; assist in determining quality guidelines.
- Establish high morale within the department by showing fairness, consistency, and interest in employee problems while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain inventories of sheets, inks, and other converting supplies.
- Coordinate with supervisor and Maintenance Superintendent on repairs or preventive maintenance in the department.
- Keep upper management informed of problems or situations that may affect department performance.
- Enforce corrective action procedures when applicable and conduct meetings with violating employees.
- Conduct weekly Production/Safety meetings with departmental personnel.
- Communicate with necessary supervision to avoid problems between shift changes.
- Improve career skills by enrolling in seminars, technical courses, and related college courses.
- Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, including the safety program and good housekeeping.
- Comply with company policies and procedures.
- Additional duties may be assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly supervise all employees assigned to the department.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; conflict resolution; team building; coaching and leading employees to improve; addressing complaints and resolving problems; documentation; and setting an example of superior behavior, attitude, and performance.
Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
- Two years prior supervisory experience.
- Prior work experience in the corrugated industry preferred.
Skills
- Language: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Mathematical: Ability to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume, and rate. Ability to apply concepts of high school math.
- Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Technical:
- Working knowledge of equipment design and capabilities to support efficient operation and training of personnel.
- Understanding of cost issues to make daily decisions that reduce overall costs and identify areas for improvement.
- Knowledge of quality standards and regulatory requirements, including wage and hour, environmental, waste minimization, company policies, and personnel requirements (OSHA, DEQ, EEO).
- Leadership:
- Superior time management skills, including managing multiple issues concurrently and leading effective meetings.
- Teaching skills to train personnel in both technical and administrative aspects of the position.
- Excellent crisis management, demonstrating emotional control under adverse conditions.
- Strong employee relations skills, including active listening, performance appraisal, feedback (positive and corrective), conflict resolution, and motivational techniques such as coaching and delegation.
- Demonstrated confidence and consistent leadership style with professional assertiveness.
Certifications
May be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, or hear.
- Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally required to sit.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
