Controls Technician - Night Shift

About the role

This position for an Electrical Controls Technician is based at Abbott’s Columbus, Ohio plant within the Abbott Nutrition Division. The role focuses on maintaining plant electrical and mechanical systems and equipment in compliance with all applicable corporate, state, and federal regulations. The Maintenance Department provides support to manufacturing teams through preventative and predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and upgrading of processing, packaging, and filling line equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs and troubleshoot high-speed equipment and plant utility systems; make machine adjustments to case packers, palletizers, sleevers, labelers, and other equipment for proper operation.
• Perform Preventative Maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation.
• Troubleshoot and repair/replace variable frequency drives (VFDs), vision systems, barcode scanners, video-jet ink printers, and computer control systems.
• Install various components including seals, bushings, couplings, bearings, O-rings, gaskets, adhesives, belts, chains, rollers, sprockets, gears, sheaves, and cylinders.
• Wire and repair/replace electric motors; repair basic wiring, install/replace correct size fuses, troubleshoot motor overload protection, and contactors.
• Use electrical tools such as multi-meter and Megger.
• Maintain and troubleshoot problems with AC drive systems and PLCs.
• Access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station and properly maintain a PLC.
• Make emergency repairs with welding and fabricating brackets.
• Follow guidelines within National Electric Code (NEC); read electrical schematics and wire directly from wiring diagrams.
• Maintain various hand tools and equipment, including drills, wrenches, micrometers, calipers, torches, welders, lathe, mill, multimeter, grinders, and bandsaw.
• Follow all plant and department procedures, GMPs, and plant safety rules; keep all work areas clean by following 5S protocol.
• Follow all maintenance safety procedures, including LOTO.

Requirements

• 2+ years of electrician, controls technician, or industrial experience.
• Electrical technical degree, or High School Diploma/GED and 2+ years of equivalent experience in an Instrumentation or related role.
• Able to access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station and understand wiring schematics.
• Experience with Allen Bradley, Rockwell, RSLogix including but not limited to VFDs and PLCs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher in an electrical technical field.
• Experience with Instrumentation – performing calibrations and critical PMs on equipment components to ensure operation within proper tolerances.
• Experience with instruments such as pressure, flow, temperature, humidity, level, weight, or scale; using 4-20 mA loop control, 0-10V control, calibration procedures, setup, and verification with other equipment.
• Able to repair and rebuild centrifugal/positive displacement pumps, capper chucks, and filler valves.
• Able to work with the Plant engineering team to develop sustainable, robust systems for asset care programs.

Pay

$41.60/hour. The base pay range for this position is $24.65 – $49.25 per hour, with variations in specific locations.

Schedule

12-hour night shift: 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM, with rotating onsite days.
