Hyperion Technology Group, Inc. designs and builds custom automated machinery, testing equipment, and specialized systems for industries including Consumer Products, Medical/Life Sciences, Automotive and Light Industrial, and Government Agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and balance product specifications, process control requirements, layout complexity, cost, quality, and lead-time limits.
  • Design new industrial electrical control panels compliant with NFPA79, NFPA70, and UL508A standards, and create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics.
  • Architect, write, and debug organized, structured, and documented PLC code that interacts with subsystems such as conveyors, robots, Manufacturing Execution System (MES), LabView, machine vision, and 3rd party equipment.
  • Implement control reliable safety systems (ANSI, NFPA, and ISO compliant) for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment.
  • Generate simple yet effective HMI screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting.
  • Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic, and fluid plumbing.
  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components.
  • Introduce automated processes into production and train Maintenance and Production Teams post-deployment.
  • Create machine interactions with plant-wide MES to communicate product acceptability, machine status, and process variables.
  • Open to travel up to 10% to customer sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 3-5 years' experience as a hands-on Controls Design Engineer or Applications Engineer working on automation and/or electromechanical systems (5-10 years preferred).

Skills

  • Proficiency with process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, NFPA70, UL508A).
  • In-depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI, NFPA, ISO, OSHA).
  • Advanced proficiency programming industrial equipment: PLCs (Allen Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, RSLogix 5000) and Safety PLCs (Allen Bradley GuardLogix, Banner, etc.).
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI/GUI - AB RSView, FactoryTalk, WinCC, Ignition).
  • Field bus Networks (DeviceNet, Ethernet IP, Safety rated field bus networks).
  • Serial communication (RS-232, RS-485) between devices and Ethernet communications between machine PLCs and databases.
  • Demonstrated excellence in programming PLCs with a well-defined methodology for maintaining code structure.
  • Ability to program state machines for complex processes involving multi-station parallel processing, pick and place automation, data acquisition, and PIO control.
  • Proven ability to design fault-tolerant systems with error handling.
  • Proficiency selecting appropriate circuit protection, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD, and servo systems.
  • Proficiency creating detailed electrical and fluid schematics in CAD (AutoCAD Electrical preferred).
  • Proficiency programming and tuning variable frequency drives.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (LVDT, pressure transducers, dispensing systems, temperature controllers, DC torque tool systems, current and power meters, etc.).
  • Experience with programming Cartesian, SCARA, and Articulated robots (Fanuc, Kuka, Yaskawa, Epson) is highly desired.
  • Experience with Vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc).
  • Knowledge of production quality metrics.
  • Experience with National Instruments LabView is highly desired.
  • Ability to use 3D CAD packages such as SolidWorks and Inventor is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Duties performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Requires extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting light to moderately heavy objects.
  • Eligibility to obtain a security clearance is required; non-US citizens may not be eligible.
