Job Description

The Controls Engineer at our optical fiber plant is responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining control systems for large-scale production equipment such as MCVD lathes, overcollapse lathes, and fiber draw towers. This role involves working closely with a cross-disciplinary team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Process Engineers, as well as collaborating with other functional teams to support the entire optical fiber manufacturing process.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, troubleshoot, and debug robotic, PLC, and vision system programs for manufacturing equipment
  • Deliver controls systems with structured software development practices to ensure safe, fast, and efficient systems completion
  • Design electrical control panels, develop implementation plans, and coordinate execution
  • Work daily with the manufacturing and equipment teams onsite, support needed repairs, and suggest equipment or control system improvements to stabilize manufacturing processes
  • Plan for preventative maintenance
  • Develop operating procedures and training material for Engineering and Production teams
  • Effectively work with external machine builders and system integrators for detailed designs, builds, and integrations

Education and Work Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Systems & Control Engineering or a related field, along with strong electro-mechanical skills and experience in automation, robotics, and control system integration in manufacturing processes. Demonstrated ability to take personal ownership for areas of responsibility, effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, and a focus on safety are essential.

Qualifications

Strong team player capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision, energetic, highly motivated, organized, and able to multitask on multiple projects.

Skills

Knowledge of automation, robotics, and control system integration technologies, proficiency in software development practices, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
