About the role
Johnson Controls is seeking a Controls Engineer I to support the design, development, and testing of control system software for industrial refrigeration and HVAC equipment. You will join a collaborative engineering team delivering advanced controls for chillers, air handlers, and smart building products that optimize cooling/heating performance and energy efficiency. This role offers exposure to state-of-the-art testing facilities and the opportunity to contribute to next-generation cooling solutions supporting decarbonization, data center efficiency, AI-enabled manufacturing, and sustainability initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Contribute as part of a growing engineering team addressing new control system needs in decarbonization and data center cooling
- Design, implement, test, and support control software for chillers and air handling units used in data centers, large facilities, and industrial environments
- Develop reliable and maintainable code using MATLAB/Simulink, applying model-based design principles for embedded systems
- Apply control theory fundamentals (modeling, simulation, statistics, data acquisition) to support robust and efficient control solutions
- Assist with data analysis and modeling activities to support system understanding and controller development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to support product development efforts
Requirements
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; MS preferred
- 2–3 years of controls, automation, or related engineering experience, or an MS degree with relevant project, research, or internship experience
- Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink and interest in model-based design for embedded systems
- Familiarity with basic control systems concepts, modeling, and data analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced engineering environment
- Basic ability to read embedded C/C++ code and use scripting tools such as Python or MATLAB

Pay
$70,000 - $85,000 (Salary to be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
