About the role
The Controller at Topo Designs will lead the company's accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance. Reporting to the VP of Operations, this role requires a deep understanding of accounting principles and the ability to manage a dynamic, growing organization.
Responsibilities
- Own the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and documentation
- Maintain and enforce company accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely processing and collections
- Manage payroll processing in collaboration with HR, ensuring accuracy and compliance
- Perform and oversee periodic bank reconciliations and ensure timely debt payments
- Produce timely, accurate, and complete financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
- Develop and track financial and operational metrics, and report material issues to leadership
- Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including maintaining management cost reports
- Provide financial analyses to support capital investment decisions, pricing strategy, and contract negotiations
- Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit, preparing all necessary schedules and documentation
- Monitor debt levels and ensure compliance with debt covenants
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements, including tax filings
- Own accounting operations within NetSuite, ensuring data integrity, clean processes, and effective use of the platform
- Lead and develop the accounting team, providing coaching, clarity, and accountability
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability of the finance function
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in consumer products, retail, or branded goods
- CPA preferred; public accounting background a strong plus
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and experience managing a full-cycle accounting close
- NetSuite experience preferred; comfortable owning systems and driving process improvements
- Experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and banking functions in a multi-channel business
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to communicate financial results clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- Collaborative, low-ego leadership style; builds trust through consistency and follow-through
- Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial environment where you're building infrastructure, not just maintaining it
Qualifications
- College degree in Accounting or Finance
- Experience in a similar role within a consumer products, retail, or branded goods company
- Experience with financial analysis and reporting
- Experience with budgeting and forecasting
- Experience with financial modeling and analysis
- Experience with financial statement preparation and review
Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with financial software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or other ERP systems
Benefits
Topo Designs offers a competitive salary range of $130,000 - $150,000 annually, along with comprehensive benefits including health insurance, retirement plans, and a generous product allowance. The company also provides a flexible work schedule and a supportive, collaborative work environment.
