Controller
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations for a growing, family-owned agricultural business. This leadership role is responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, forecasting, compliance, and strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate understands the unique financial cycles of agriculture and enjoys partnering with executive leadership to support long-term business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the company's accounting and finance functions, including general ledger, payroll, budgeting, treasury, and cash management.
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Develop annual budgets, financial forecasts, multi-year projections, and key performance metrics.
Analyze financial performance, identify trends, and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
Oversee tax reporting, lending requirements, audits, insurance programs, and relationships with outside accounting firms.
Improve accounting systems, financial processes, and reporting capabilities.
Partner with executive leadership on financial strategy, capital planning, and business initiatives.
Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Ensure the confidentiality and security of all financial and payroll information.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
CPA, MBA, or Master's degree strongly preferred.
Seven or more years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience.
Previous experience in agriculture, food manufacturing, wine production, or a seasonal business environment is highly preferred.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and internal controls.
Experience with ERP/accounting systems; AgStar or AMS experience is a plus.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and excellent analytical, organizational, and communication abilities.
Proven leadership experience managing and developing accounting teams.
Work Environment
This position is primarily office-based with occasional visits to agricultural production sites. Candidates should be comfortable working in both office and outdoor environments as needed and be able to lift up to 30 pounds on occasion.
