General Function
The Control Systems Engineer will design, program, integrate, and sustain control systems for both R&D assets and production manufacturing equipment. This role is the primary owner of controls programming—developing PLC/HMI/SCADA logic, motion control, and associated automation interfaces—while collaborating with mechanical, electrical, process, and quality teams to deliver robust, safe, and maintainable solutions. This role spans the full lifecycle: requirements definition, architecture, implementation, FAT/SAT, commissioning, validation, and ongoing support to ensure safety, reliability, and throughput.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and implement programming for PLC/robotic systems, utilizing common platforms such as Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley and Epson Robotics
- Design and implement HMI/SCADA screens, alarms, recipes, and interlocks; optimize usability and maintainability
- Integrate industrial networks and appropriate field devices (EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, IO‑Link)
- Partner with cross-functional teams (GE/R&D/Operations/Process/Quality/IT) to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions
- Cook up with machine builders, system integrators, and component vendors; review designs, run design reviews, and manage punch lists
- Manage and/or execute software development for new equipment
- Support concept testing, characterization, optimization, and validation efforts
- Perform I/O checkout, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and validation (including safety validation) for R&D and production equipment
- Ensure equipment documentation is developed and maintained appropriately
- Ensure all new equipment conforms to organizational Machine Safety standards
- Seek ways to improve process equipment in terms of reliability, throughput, process robustness, flexibility, and cost
- Provide technical training to colleagues as needed
- Provide on-floor support for equipment startup, debugging, and operations; respond to downtime events quickly and efficiently
- Occasional weekend work
- Domestic & International travel (up to 10%)
Basic Qualifications
- S. in Electrical Engineering, Controls/Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3-6 years of hands-on experience in programming PLCs, robots, and HMIs for industrial equipment
- In-depth knowledge of PLC, robot, and safety programming, mainly Allen-Bradley and Epson systems
- Familiarity with electrical schematics and panel standards
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate cross functionally
- Overall mechanical aptitude and familiarity with electro-pneumatic equipment
- Able to simplify complex problems and pursue practical, effective solutions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, 365)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Ignition SCADA software
- Broad knowledge of programming languages and platforms: Java, Python, C++, VB.Net, SQL, and Visilogic
- Strong documentation skills; comfortable with version control and change management
- Experience with RCAs, CAPA activities, and risk assessments
