Control Room Operator

About the role

The position is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of all equipment and systems to meet the steam and electrical demand of the campus. It works independently or with minimal direction from the Shift Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor all plant equipment and systems to maintain continuous steam and electric service.
• Communicate with appropriate personnel to ensure malfunctions are corrected promptly.
• Handle off‑hours neighbor telephone queries in a courteous and professional manner.
• Run nightly reports and update spreadsheet reports accurately and timely for EPA, NC DAQ, DOE, NC DWQ, and engineering studies.
• Maintain awareness of the One Plan (FRP, SPCC, SWP3, UNCEP) and ensure compliance.
• Remain current on operating procedures and plant configuration changes; provide recommendations for improvements.
• Assist the Shift Supervisor in training junior operators and be prepared to stand in for the Shift Supervisor when qualified.
• Use and enforce all safety and operating procedures; perform lockout/tagout clearances and pre‑job briefings.
• Always use designated PPE and maintain a neat, clean work environment (housekeeping).
• Assist with facility security during non‑business hours and weekends (24/7).

Requirements

• High‑level plant operating skills with detailed plant and systems knowledge.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with operators, maintenance, and other personnel.
• Capability to remain current on all operating procedures and plant configuration changes.
• Willingness to provide recommendations for procedural improvements and revisions.
• Qualified to train junior operators and to assume Shift Supervisor duties when needed.
• Knowledge of safety procedures, lockout/tagout, and proper PPE usage.

Benefits

• Sign‑on bonus of $6,953 paid in two installments within 12 months of hire: $3,476.50 within 30 days of hire date and $3,476.50 12 months after hire date.

Schedule

This position requires a 24/7‑365 days/year rotational 12‑hour shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with expectation to cover both planned and unplanned absences (vacation, sick leave, ETO, staffing shortages, etc.).
