About the role

The Control Room Operator leads and directs employees who oversee and direct the operation of the facility under the direction of the shift Supervisor. This position is responsible for continuously monitoring the status of all plant systems, responding to alarms, executing plant shut-down and start-up procedures, and ensuring the plant meets generating requirements while operating safely and in an environmentally efficient manner.

Responsibilities

• Control operation of station systems including steam generation, condensate, feed water, turbine/generator, circulating water, service water, fuel handling, ash handling, electrical, fire protection, air pollution control, and various computer networks.
• Understand and train other Operators on the operating principles of the power facility’s systems, components, and steam cycles.
• Read and interpret meters, gauges, recorders, and annunciators to determine system operating conditions; take action within prescribed normal and emergency station operating procedures.
• Adjust and monitor temperatures, pressures, flow, and levels on station primary system components for plant optimization.
• Initiate and conduct periodic surveillance tests on station operating safety checks and tests on station operating conditions; take action within prescribed normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures.
• Maintain required logs and calculations; observe logs for indications of faulty operation and notify supervisor of abnormal system conditions.
• Monitor operation of station systems and components including pumps, motors, valves, fans, dampers, grates, augers, conveyors, and dust collection equipment.
• Monitor operability of fire protection systems, emergency backup equipment, electrical supply equipment, and instrumentation associated with station systems and components.
• Monitor air pollution control equipment.
• Accurately read and record data, report equipment malfunctions or trends indicating potential equipment danger.
• Identify and correct abnormal operating conditions or emergency situations.

Requirements

• Valid Massachusetts Second Class Engineer’s License or higher.
• Associate’s Degree or equivalent technical training in power plant operations.
• Basic computer, oral and written communication skills, and problem-solving and decision-making ability.
• Ability to read blueprints, P&IDs, and understand schematic specifications and vendor technical manuals.
• At least three years of previous experience with high-pressure boilers and electric generating equipment, or formal technical training and a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Strong leadership and motivational skills.
• Ability to stay alert while sitting for long periods.
• Ability to work in all plant locations, including tight quarters, confined spaces, and under extremes of heat, cold, dust, noise, and wet conditions.
• Ability to work at heights, lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs., and perform manual labor including pushing, pulling, sweeping, and shoveling.
• Must be able to work overtime as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays with minimum notice.
• Must be clean-shaven (shaved the day of work) to comply with OSHA respirator regulations. Mustaches are permitted if they do not extend beyond the jawbone or interfere with respirator sealing points. Full beards, goatees, and bushy sideburns are prohibited.
