About the role

Ormat serves the changing world of electricity generation, distributed generation, and demand management by enabling comprehensive solutions—from energy and demand response management to energy storage systems. We provide grid operators with tools to enhance grid performance, stability, and responsiveness while delivering capacity at the right time and price. We also offer commercial, industrial, and municipal clients reliability, power quality solutions, peak shaving, and demand charge management to lower utility bills. In unregulated markets, we provide ancillary market services to generate revenue.

The Energy Storage Operator manages the real-time operations of Ormat’s battery storage portfolio, including monitoring grid conditions, battery storage operation, event forecasting, and analytics reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the real-time operations of Ormat’s battery portfolio, including dispatching generation based on economic conditions and operational constraints.
  • Take or direct timely and appropriate real-time actions in accordance with ISO procedures.
  • Coordinate unit availability, outage schedules, unit startup and shutdown, and communicate all necessary information to plant personnel, ISOs, and asset management.
  • Implement real-time actions to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System.
  • Communicate with Scheduling Coordinators, Transmission Operators, and ISOs on a continual basis, taking necessary actions and providing ancillary services to ensure system reliability.
  • Comply with applicable NERC Reliability Standards and regional ISO rules and tariffs.
  • Monitor and analyze available market information to identify dispatching and trading opportunities.
  • Operate battery storage assets with a continuous focus on balancing operation vs. equipment health.
  • Maintain reliability by conducting system checks and fixing errors.
  • Ensure documentation for processes you are responsible for is current and complete.
  • Actively contribute to conversations about process improvements, tool enhancements, and general team operation.
  • Complete necessary NERC or ISO certification and continuing education requirements (certification must be completed within 6–10 months of hire).
  • Work outside of normal business hours and adhere to a rotating shift on a 24-hour operational schedule (initial training phase: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, for up to 4 months).
  • Fulfill storm/event duty requirements, including reporting to work during winter storms or catastrophic events and working extended shifts as necessary.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, or relevant experience, or equivalent military experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read and follow written procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English at a level that permits accurate understanding and effective communication of information to safely and efficiently perform job duties.
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to Ormat’s auto insurance carrier.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous energy industry experience.
  • NERC or PJM certification (candidate must complete certification within 12 months of hire).
  • Prior experience working in one or more of the following markets: CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, PJM, NYISO, IESO, ISONE.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in an office environment, including sitting and/or standing for long periods with moderate bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work at a computer and computer monitor for extended periods while staying alert.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds without assistance.

Schedule

Rotating shift on a 24-hour operational schedule. Initial training phase (up to 4 months): 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
