About the Role
A Contract Surety Underwriter is accountable for underwriting Contract Surety products to achieve business plan goals in the assigned territory, including new business, renewal retention, pricing, and profitability. This role reports to the Regional Underwriting Director and partners with the Regional Underwriting Manager to foster agency/broker relationships and develop a profitable book of business.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability within scope of authority and per divisional objectives.
- Analyze submissions, assess risk quality, and determine terms in accordance with company guidelines.
- Apply underwriting rules, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
- Make recommendations on risks over authority.
- Enter, maintain, and monitor accounts using underwriting, analysis, and desktop systems.
- Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
- Prepare effective internal and external communications on underwriting issues.
- Develop a book of contract surety business with select brokers/agents and maintain effective business relationships.
- Visit producers and principals to retain existing accounts, survey exposures, build relationships, and develop new opportunities.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience is required; contract surety experience is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Strong communication skills to build and leverage customer relationships and market products.
- Sales mindset for creating and following through on pipeline opportunities.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Analytical thinking to address business problems and propose solutions.
- High energy, self-starter with resilience and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Solid time, organizational, and desk management skills.
- Goal-oriented mindset with a track record of delivering on objectives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new applications.
- Travel and a valid driver's license are required.
