About the Role

Under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), provide continuous visual and proximal contact with patients to support safety, comfort, and a therapeutic environment. This role involves one-on-one observation of patients who may be confused, at risk for self-harm, or exhibit unpredictable behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Provide constant one-on-one observation to patients, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Assist with basic comfort services, including setting up trays, feeding patients, and helping with mobility (e.g., lifting, walking).
  • Maintain a safe environment, using trained interventions to prevent self-harm or injury.
  • Accompany patients during transportation for tests or procedures.
  • Notify clinical staff of any changes in patient status or appearance.
  • Stay with the patient at all times, including during emergencies.
  • Document patient behaviors and actions accurately and promptly.
  • Comply with all federal, state, organizational, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete required training, including mobility training and Health Stream modules.
  • Respect patient rights, privacy, and dignity while ensuring safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Verbal communication skills, hearing, sight, and manual dexterity required.
  • Comfort working with a diverse population and communicating with compassion.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

Preferences

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare or customer service setting.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues (Exposure Category I).
  • Possible exposure to hostile individuals.
  • Able to stand, walk, stretch, reach, or bend for 3-5 hours per day.
  • Able to assist with moving adult patients weighing up to 300 lbs.
  • Able to sit and focus on patient observation for extended periods, including the entire shift.
  • Able to work in a stressful environment while maintaining sight, hearing, and communication.
  • Able to communicate appropriately with a diverse population and work with patients who may have infectious diseases.
