About the role

This position involves inspecting meat, poultry, and egg products to ensure they meet regulatory requirements and are safe for human consumption.

Responsibilities

  • Execute appropriate inspection methods to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Determine non-compliance with regulatory requirements and document findings.
  • Review records, observe plant operations, and conduct hands-on verification to ensure compliance.
  • Assess when regulatory control action is necessary and discuss corrective or preventative actions with plant managers.
  • Communicate and defend determinations on non-compliance issues and discuss plans for addressing non-compliance.
  • Advise other inspectors on inspection and enforcement matters.
  • Conduct various samplings, surveys, and tests to gather data on potential problem areas.
  • Ensure products approved for import are compliant with Federal regulations.
  • Coordinate with other Federal agencies on matters related to animal health and refused entry lots.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. national status.
  • Training as a condition of employment within 90 days of selection.
  • Pass background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Pass E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, and effectively communicate in English.

Qualifications

  • Specialized experience: Knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities and substances, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or other food for human consumption.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with major study in agricultural, biological, or physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, home economics, pharmacy, engineering, or nutrition, or a combination of education and specialized experience.
  • Experience: At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience, including working as a consumer safety inspector, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or other related positions.

Pay

The salary range for this position is determined by the General Schedule (GS) pay scale.

The schedule for this position is typically full-time, with a mix of office work and on-site inspections.
