About the role

Steptoe LLP is seeking an experienced litigator with at least 5 years of experience for a Staff Attorney position in its Century City, Los Angeles, or San Francisco office. The Staff Attorney will primarily assist with litigating and settling consumer financial services matters on behalf of financial institutions, under the supervision of Partners in Steptoe’s Consumer Litigation practice group.

Responsibilities

  • Manage individual litigation and arbitration matters, including reviewing correspondence and pleadings, reporting urgent issues to the supervising Partner, managing calendars and deadlines, conducting document review, supervising local counsel, drafting pleadings and motions, and handling discovery.
  • Settlement duties include regular communication with opposing counsel, preparing client settlement recommendations, and drafting agreements.
  • Handle court appearances and attend arbitration merits hearings as needed.

Requirements

  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • The ability to multitask.
  • Confidence in working with opposing counsel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with arbitration matters in JAMS or AAA.
  • Defending financial institutions or commercial clients against claims under consumer protection, banking, or privacy laws.
  • Experience in bankruptcy court (including adversary proceedings).

Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in the California bar, active and in good standing.

Benefits

We offer competitive compensation and excellent benefits in a collegial working environment that provides training and mentorship. The anticipated salary range is $174,000 to $218,000. The actual base salary offered will depend upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to, relevant skills, education, certifications or other professional licenses held, and geographic location.
